Promoting urban sustainability through education

We had the honor of participating in an exceptional event organized within the University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Bucharest, under the aegis of Converde, with the support of specialists from member companies EcoStratos and Odu Green Roofs. This event, held in the auditorium of the Faculty of Landscape Architecture, was part of the Bucharest Horticulture Days and brought together students, academics, architects and professionals from related fields, with the aim of promoting one of the most promising directions for the future of the urban environment: green roofs.

As active members of the Converde association, we had the pleasure of giving a broad and detailed presentation on green roof systems, highlighting their advantages and transformative potential on the urban landscape.

The presentation was structured in several stages, each of which made essential contributions to the understanding and implementation of these innovative solutions. Landscape architect Eszter Gáll provided a comprehensive introduction to the types and structures of green roofs, explaining the general considerations that must be taken into account in their planning phase. Through visual examples and clear explanations, participants were able to understand how these systems integrate harmoniously into the built environment.

In the second part of the presentation, mr. Zoltán Kolcsár, President of the Converde Association, focused on intensive green roof solutions, which require higher maintenance but offer substantial benefits in terms of biodiversity, thermal insulation and urban aesthetics. Practical advice and concrete examples provided a realistic picture of the implementation of these systems in landscape projects.

As a solid academic conclusion, Mrs. Prof. Dr. Arch. Ana-Maria Dabija, honorary member of the association, presented the normative guide developed together with her professional team. The guide is an essential document that specifically regulates green roofs in Romania. These provisions represent an important first step in the professionalization and standardization of the field at national level.

The event managed to arouse real and enthusiastic interest from the participants. The audience actively participated through pertinent questions, reasoned comments and applied dialogues, which highlighted a growing curiosity for green solutions and ecological innovations. Such interactions are essential for strengthening a community of professionals concerned with the future of urbanism and the environment.

In addition, within the “Caru’ cu Darul” program, a beautiful initiative organized by Prof. Dr. Arch. Ana-Maria Dabija, students had the opportunity to come into direct contact with samples of materials used in construction, including those used in the creation of green roofs. This tactile and visual experience was extremely valuable for future specialists, contributing to the applied understanding of materials and systems.

The event created a space for applied education, professional networking and inspiration. The program brought together students, teachers, architects and horticultural enthusiasts, encouraging the exchange of ideas and the development of future collaborations.

We believe that ecological education and the promotion of green infrastructure must become a priority in training new generations of professionals. They will play an essential role in shaping the cities of tomorrow – greener, healthier, more resilient cities.

By participating in such events, we responsibly assume the role of promoters of sustainability. We believe that direct interaction with students and teachers contributes to the development of an authentic ecological awareness and the formation of critical and innovative thinking regarding contemporary urban challenges.

The Converde Association aims to develop continuous promotion, education and information programs, both in the academic environment and among professionals in the fields of architecture, landscaping and construction. We want to open new horizons regarding the integration of green systems in urban infrastructure and to actively contribute to the achievement of a coherent and updated legislative framework.

We look to the future with confidence and are convinced that the enthusiasm of young people, combined with our support and experience, will generate real and sustainable changes in the urban environment. The key to a green future lies in the hands of the new generation, and we are ready to join them in this mission.
